What does that actually tell us? Ten parts of starting plant material went into making one part of extract, on the basis the supplier used for the calculation. That’s it. The number doesn’t promise ten times the active compounds, and it certainly doesn’t tell us everything we need to know about the powder.

Now picture two quotations sitting side by side. Both say 10:1. Both look reasonable. But one supplier means genuine botanical extract; the other means a commercial powder containing maltodextrin. If we compare those prices by the kilogram without asking another question, we may be comparing two rather different ingredients.

So let’s unpack the numbers the way a sourcing or formulation team actually needs to: what went into the extractor, what came out, what the manufacturer added afterward, and what the Certificate of Analysis can—and cannot—prove.

What Does a Botanical Extract Ratio Mean?

The basic idea is a mass relationship. In technical documents, you may see the name Drug-to-Extract Ratio, shortened to DER. The word drug here comes from pharmacopoeial terminology for herbal material. It doesn’t mean the botanical ingredient is a pharmaceutical drug.

Extract ratio = Weight of starting botanical material : Weight of extract obtained

Say we start with 10 kg of dried plant material and recover 1 kg of native dry extract. We call that a 10:1 native DER. If we recover 1 kg from 4 kg of starting material, it’s 4:1. Easy enough.

But here’s the question we always want answered before accepting the calculation: Did the supplier start with fresh material or dried material?

Fresh leaves and dried leaves carry very different amounts of water. That matters. A dramatic-looking number can sometimes reflect moisture removal rather than a dramatic increase in a constituent we’re interested in.

Take a concentrated aloe vera extract powder as an example. Before we read too much into the declared ratio, we need to know whether the manufacturer used fresh inner-leaf material, dried material, or another clearly specified solids basis. Without that detail, a comparison can go sideways fast.

We should also expect some natural variation. Plants aren’t manufactured to identical chemical profiles, and extraction yields can shift between batches. An honest specification may show a range such as 7–9:1 rather than an implausibly perfect number for every lot.

Native Extract Ratio vs. Finished Extract Ratio: The Carrier Dilemma

This is the distinction we would put near the top of any supplier-comparison sheet.

A native extract, sometimes called a genuine extract, consists of the botanical material recovered through extraction before the manufacturer adds excipients. A finished extract powder may combine that native extract with processing or handling ingredients such as maltodextrin or silicon dioxide.

And no, a carrier isn’t automatically a problem. Some botanical extracts are stubbornly sticky, absorb moisture, or don’t dry into a practical powder without help. A carrier can serve a legitimate technical purpose. The trouble starts when nobody tells the buyer how much is there.

Here’s a simple production example. The arithmetic matters more than the marketing name.

Production step

Weight

Dried botanical material entering extraction

10 kg

Native extract solids recovered

1 kg

Maltodextrin added afterward

1 kg

Finished commercial powder

2 kg

Now we have two different ratios for that one batch:

Native DER: 10 kg ÷ 1 kg = 10:1.

Starting plant to finished extract ratio: 10 kg ÷ 2 kg = 5:1.

Native extract content in the finished powder: 50%.

Look at the difference. A supplier could correctly report a 10:1 native DER and still sell a powder that contains only 50% native extract. That isn’t necessarily deception. But describing the whole commercial powder simply as “10:1” without clarifying the basis can mislead the person making the purchase.

So we ask three things: Is the declared ratio native or finished? How much genuine extract does the finished powder contain? And which carriers appear in the formulation?

The European Medicines Agency’s guidance on declaring herbal preparations distinguishes genuine extract from added excipients. The American Herbal Products Association AHPA guidance also addresses how industry communicates botanical extracts and their composition. Exact legal requirements vary with the product and destination market, of course. Still, the buying habit is simple: request the native DER, the finished-extract ratio where relevant, and the carrier breakdown as separate pieces of information.

Why a Higher Ratio Does Not Guarantee Higher Potency

Which sounds stronger: 20:1 or 10:1?

Most people point to 20:1. We understand why. The larger number suggests that the manufacturer used more plant material per unit of resulting extract. But does that mean more of the compound your formulation needs? Not necessarily.

Plant material contains a whole mix of substances. The manufacturer chooses a solvent, sets processing conditions, separates the extract, and sometimes performs additional purification. Each decision changes what ends up in the final material. Even two producers working with the same species and plant part can deliver noticeably different chemical profiles.

Think about extraction solvents. Water and ethanol don’t pull the same compounds in the same proportions, and a water–ethanol mixture gives the processor another set of options. Raw-material quality, extraction temperature, and processing time matter too.

A higher DER can indicate a lower overall yield or a selective extraction process. It does not, on its own, prove superior marker content, stability, or biological activity. That’s the distinction we don’t want a purchasing decision to miss.

Consider a water-soluble cinnamon extract powder. Rather than relying on a 10:1 or 20:1 label, we’d ask which cinnamon species the supplier used, what “water-soluble” means in the specification, and how the manufacturer monitors any constituents of concern. The ratio won’t answer those questions for us.

Or take a pumpkin seed extract powder. Did the manufacturer extract whole seeds, or did it first press out the oil and work with defatted seed cake? That one processing decision can reshape the material’s composition. Two powders carrying the same 10:1 designation may behave quite differently in a formula.

Higher ratios can be useful. Lower ratios can be useful. We pick the material that meets the actual specification, not the one with the most impressive number on the label.

Ratio Extracts vs. Standardized Extracts: How to Choose

This distinction gets muddled surprisingly easily, partly because a botanical ingredient can carry both an extract-ratio claim and a standardized-marker specification.

The ratio describes a relationship in the manufacturing process. Standardization describes a declared amount or range of selected chemical constituents in the extract, which the manufacturer supports with an appropriate test. Different questions. Different evidence.

Ratio Extracts (TLC / Qualitative Identification)

We might see a ratio extract offered as 4:1, 10:1, or 20:1, with no promise that one named compound reaches a particular percentage. That can work for projects focused on a broader botanical profile rather than a single quantified marker.

But we still need to know that we’re buying the correct plant. That part is non-negotiable.

Methods such as TLC and HPTLC can help compare the sample’s chemical fingerprint with authenticated botanical reference material. They’re useful identity tools when the laboratory uses suitable methods. What they cannot do is look at a finished powder and tell us exactly how many kilograms of herbs entered the extractor months ago.

Let’s use papaya extract powder. If our application calls for a general papaya botanical ingredient, a 10:1 or 20:1 ratio may help describe the material, provided the identity and other specifications check out. If the formula depends on papain enzyme activity, though, we need a relevant enzyme-activity test. A ratio is not a substitute.

Standardized Extracts (Quantified Assay)

With a standardized extract, we ask for a measurable target: perhaps a stated percentage or acceptable range of selected polyphenols, ginsenosides, or other markers. The laboratory may use HPLC, UHPLC, or a suitable spectrophotometric method, depending on the analyte and specification.

Sounds more precise? It can be. But we still need to read the fine print.

“Total polyphenols” is not the same measurement as a specific polyphenol. A convincing specification names the marker, explains the method, sets the limits, and makes clear how the laboratory reports the result.

For a white tea extract powder, for example, a buyer interested in a defined catechin profile learns more from supported catechin or EGCG results than from a generic 10:1 leaf-to-extract claim. The ratio has its place; it just doesn’t replace the assay.

We should also resist an easy leap: standardization doesn’t automatically demonstrate clinical benefit, establish regulatory approval, or justify a product claim. Those conclusions need their own evidence.

Technical Comparison: Botanical Extract Formats Across Sourcing Criteria

We find it more useful to compare botanical materials by what their specifications actually describe, rather than treating every powder as a slightly different version of the same product. We’d choose scientifically appropriate methods for the material and keep evidence for the ratio separate from analytical identity and assay results.

3. Inconsistent Ash Content and Bulk Density

What if a lot looks paler than usual, flows differently, or shows an unexpected ash result? Those differences can give a quality team a reason to dig deeper, but they don’t identify a carrier by themselves.

Compare the sample against the agreed specification.
